Compare how the doors and drawer fronts fit against the cabinet frame. We build all four options with a face frame.

Illustrative preview based on our sample cabinet layout. Wood grain, color, profile depth, and proportions are approximate. The two larger drawer fronts follow the selected five-piece door style; shallow top drawers are shown slab. Final details are confirmed in your project drawings. Painted white illustrates the look of painted cabinetry.

Four face-frame options.

A face frame is the wood framework around the openings at the front of a cabinet. Overlay doors rest in front of that frame; inset doors fit inside it.

Door style is a separate choice. Each view uses the same sample layout, white oak, and Soft-Edge Shaker doors as the interactive preview, so you can focus on how much frame shows and where the fronts sit.

Illustrations compare the door position and exposed frame. They are not dimensioned shop drawings.

½-inch Overlay

Doors and drawer fronts overlap the face frame by ½ inch around their openings. More of the frame remains visible between and around the fronts, giving each cabinet a defined outline.

The amount of exposed frame depends on the frame widths in your design.

Full Overlay

Doors and drawer fronts cover most of the face frame, leaving smaller spaces between the fronts. The result is a more continuous look across a run of cabinetry.

Our full-overlay cabinetry is built with a face frame behind the doors. Reveals and clearances are planned for each project.

Inset

Doors and drawer fronts fit inside the face-frame openings, with their faces flush with the frame. A narrow gap around each front defines the fit and allows it to open.

The exposed frame becomes a prominent part of the design, surrounding each door and drawer front.

Beaded Inset

Inset doors and drawer fronts sit flush within the face frame, with an added bead detail around the openings. That small rounded detail gives the frame an extra layer of definition.

The bead belongs to the frame opening; the door profile is chosen separately.
